Riding the Grand Mesa

Last Sunday I rode a group of trails that I've been wanting to stitch together for some time, as we work on the route from the top of the Grand Mesa to the valley floor in Palisade.  Doesn't that sound like a lot of fun - start at ~10,700' and end at ~4700'?  OK, this is not that ride, but it is working in that direction.

This route was about 20 miles, beginning at Carson Lake, climbing on the Carson Lake trail to Flowing Park, then a rough and rocky descent off of Indian Point to intercept Spring Camp trail, and later Kannah Creek Trail to return to Carson Lake.  I think this loop included about 3200 ft of net elevation change, with a little of that climbing occuring more than once.  The trail was clear of nearly all downfall by some recent saw work (thank you USFS), but still a bit of route finding was needed for a couple of turnoffs.  All in all, a stellar ride, with great weather, beautiful alpine riding, a huge Elk herd (maybe 100 animals) & Turkey flocks, and rustling aspens.  The GPS conked out about a mile before the end of the ride, but you get the idea.

There are a bunch of great trails in the nearby high country.  The new Mesa Top Trail, and Flowing Park loop are just a couple of the more recent ones, but there is some great back country riding here.

The Niner RIP-9, and White Brothers Loop 29 fork are a perfect match for this sort of fun.  Rapid Creek Cycles can get you on a perfect ride to enjoy this sort of trail, or any other.

Come ride with us.  Scott
